Your Closet in the Cloud – Rent the Runway Unlimited

Brilliant! Ladies, would you pay just over $100 a month for totally new wardrobe? How does it sound to constantly rotate your wardrobe with new items? Dresses, pants, tops, jackets, even jewelry!

Most women who have heard of Rent the Runway know it as an evening wear rental company. For instance, instead of paying $1,000 for an evening gown or cocktail dress that you will only wear a couple of times, you can rent one for $100 or less.

Now, Rent the Runway is offering a subscription service, called “Unlimited,” to rent clothes continuously. You can choose any of the items you want — including formal wear, workwear or casual weekend wear — and swap in new ones all month long. If you are tired of what is in your closet, this is awesome!

Their turn-around time is very good. When I signed up for Unlimited over a weekend, I had three new outfits at my front door on Wednesday. After you wear an outfit, you drop it in the pre-paid bag at a UPS store. Once RTR receives it, you are queued to order your next item. I had fun creating my “favorites,” although it can be a little overwhelming because they have so many from which to choose. One of the fun things to me is that I got to wear fun outfits that I probably would never buy because they are not necessarily “my style.” This gave me the opportunity to mix it up and wear totally different things.

This service moves Rent the Runway from just a special event eveningwear rental to an everyday rental. Unlimited costs $139/month plus tax for a revolving closet of designer rentals. This includes free shipping, dry cleaning and insurance.

Brooke Hartmann, SVP of this service said in an article in The Business Journals, “Unlimited was born out of the vision to create your closet in the cloud. Your closet is a trapdoor and behind it is our warehouse where there are two football fields full of designer clothing, tops, dresses, jackets. You can have whatever you want whenever you want it.”

The idea is this. Stick to the basics in your closet and use Unlimited for all of those trendy pieces. And if you fall in love with something you rent, you can buy many items at a discount off the retail price.

When you begin your subscription, you can filter based on what you want to consider by your height, body style, occasion, your age, style (classic, trendy, edgy, etc), and designers you like. You can read other women’s reviews of the items you consider – like if it runs small, fits tight in the bust, is long, etc. There is also an app for your phone that I have enjoyed surfing while I am waiting in line or have a few minutes of down time. I have found the customer service department is excellent.

The only negatives? They are still working out a way to return just one item at a time so that the revolving door does not pause while you wait on any items, but I am confident they will sort this out because of the demand. Also, I would love for it to include more than three outfits. I have so much fun wearing my new outfits, I wish there were more than three at a time!

Professional women, this is a no-brainer. You will end up saving money on your wardrobe, have a never-ending selection of outfits, and have fun shopping virtually. I look forward to hearing your opinion if you try this out!

This service is well deserving of Caroline’s Shiny Penny!
