Houses for Firefighters and Police Officers

It’s awesome when a city enacts a sensible policy that just makes sense. The Sandy Springs City Council did that recently by providing affordable housing for public safety employees.

Sandy Springs is buying up houses along Hammond Drive to eventually widen the road. According to the Sandy Springs Reporter, if it buys a house that is not expensive to make rentable, it is opting to do the updates instead of demolishing it. Who are they renting to? Sandy Springs police officers and firefighters! Guess what the rent is per month? $500! That is less than a third of the going rate for a comparable house in the area.

Heads: What an amazing way to incentivize public servants to live in the area they serve.

Tails: What a wonderful way to thank public servants for the sacrifices they make for the area they serve.

What a wonderful idea! Kudos to the Sandy Springs City Council for making sensible policy. To read the Reporter article, it’s on page 18.
